Ghana launches Local Organizing Committee for 15th Africa Arm Wrestling Championship

The Ministry of Sport and Recreation has officially inaugurated the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 15th Africa Arm Wrestling Championship, titled “Accra 2026.”

The ceremony, held at the Ministry’s conference room, was presided over by the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, who tasked the committee with ensuring a successful and memorable championship.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Adams emphasized the broader significance of the championship, saying:

This championship is more than just about strength and competition; it’s about bringing nations together and celebrating our diversity through sport. Every sport deserves a pathway to success, and every athlete deserves recognition.

The Minister also praised the growth of arm wrestling in Ghana, noting the country’s commitment to structured development and sports excellence.

Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Ghana Arm Wrestling Federation, expressed confidence in Accra’s ability to host a world-class event.

“We aim to showcase Africa’s talent and hospitality. The dedicated professionals and sports enthusiasts on the local organizing committee will work tirelessly to deliver an event that will be remembered for years to come,” he said.

The seven-member LOC, selected for their expertise and dedication, took oaths of service, pledging to oversee the seamless planning, organization, and execution of the championship.

Mrs. Maame Afua Houageto, Chairperson of the committee and representative of the Ghana Tourism Authority, outlined the team’s priorities:

“Our focus will be on detailed planning, engaging the community, and promoting African strength and resilience through arm wrestling.”

The full committee comprises:

  • Mrs. Maame Afua Houageto (Ghana Tourism Authority) – Chairperson

  • Dr. Kofi Addo-Agyekum (Kofikrom Pharmacy Ltd) – Vice Chairperson

  • Mr. ACI Gordon Saah (Immigration Service – Security Ghana)

  • Mr. Edwin Amankwah (Global Media Alliance)

  • Mr. Gideon Hammond (Deputy Director General, F&A – NSA)

  • Miss Jessica Kwarteng (Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Protocol Officer)

  • Mr. Andre Ackah (Advertisers Association of Ghana)

The committee is now charged with delivering Africa’s premier arm-wrestling event in Accra in 2026, highlighting Ghana’s growing reputation as a hub for continental sporting events.
